AZ Trail To Go Help

Gotchas

First, there are a few gotchas that should be noted:

  • Before attempting to use the website while offline, you should view the Report Trail Condition page at least once while online.
  • This website uses some new browser standards that have not been implemented by all browsers and have been implemented differently between browsers. Our testing has been mostly using IE and Chrome. We would be interested in your feedback with other browsers.

Home

The following items are all in the "header" section and will appear at the top of all pages on the website.

  • Online indicator: This area displays the words Online in a green background or Offline in a red background depending on whether or not your device has an internet connection. The specific pages that are available or unavailable while offline are indicated in this document.

    • Submission Errors: Items that have been submitted but were not valid and therefore not accepted by the server.

Offline Support

AZ Trail To Go can be used when your device is disconnected from the internet. However, support for this feature is based on your browser’s support for this new HTML5 standard. Most modern browsers support this standard. This table indicates some of these browsers and the earliest version that supports the offline standard:

IEFirefoxSafariChromeOperaiPhoneAndroid
9+3.5+4.0+5.0+10.6+2.1+2.0+
When you submit an item on the Report Trail Condition page while working off-line, the information to be submitted will be stored in your browser until you are reconnected to the internet. If you are still on the AZ Trail To Go site when you regain an internet connection, this information will be immediately submitted. Otherwise, it will be submitted the next time you open AZ Trail To Go. Important:
  • You may need to browse to the Report Trail Condition page one time before you can work offline.
  • If you are asked permission to access GPS you will need to accept before you can work offline.
  • Please note that on some browsers, when you refresh while offline (clicking the browser’s refresh button) the page will not properly load. If this occurs, try selecting the current page again from the menu or closing the browser / tab and re-opening the website.

The following capabilities are not available when offline:
  • Login/Logoff
  • Change or Reset Password
  • User Preferences
  • Register as user
  • Items has limited availability. If you have saved a list of items while on-line it will be available off-line. Otherwise the page will be blank.
  • Viewing existing items

User Preferences

If you have registered with AZ Trail To Go, you can customize how some areas of the website behave. To access your preferences click on the log in and then click on the Hello menu item. The following preferences can be indicated here:

    • Latitude / Longitude Decimal
  • Display Format: You can choose between the following coordinate formats for location display:
    • Latitude / Longitude Decimal

    • Military Grid Reference System (MGRS)

  • Hide Location when using Mobile GPS: Selecting this option will hide the location entry fields when you are using your mobile device's GPS to fill in the location. This frees up space on the screen.
  • Hide Trail when using Mobile GPS: AZ Trail To Go will automatically assign any submittal to the correct trail passage when GPS coordinates are supplied. Selecting this option will hide the trail entry field when you are using your mobile device's GPS to fill in the location since trail selection will not be necessary.
The page is not available while working offline.

Report Trail Condition

The Report Trail Condition page allows you to submit information about trail conditions that you encounter directly to AZ Trail To Go. Because there is a minimum amount of information that we need for a submittal, certain fields are required. Either a Description and Trail must be entered or the Location must be provided. The following fields are possible for entry:

  • Item Type: An Item Type is required to be selected.
  • Description: This is required when no location is provided.
  • Size: For some Item Types, this field will be hidden. In addition, the label for this field will vary depending on the Item Type selected. This is an optional field. There may be minimum or maximum values for the field depending on the Item Type selected above.
  • Quantity: For some Item Types and / or users, this field will be hidden. In addition, the label for this field will vary depending on the Item Type selected. This is an optional field. There may be minimum or maximum values for the field depending on the Item Type selected above.
  • Location: This is optional but when not provided a description is needed.
  • Location Format: This allows you to select the format for the location.
  • Stop Using GPS / Use GPS: Toggle this button to stop using or use the device's internal GPS capabilities for determining the location. Click Stop Using GPS to manually enter a location. Click Use GPS to resume using the GPS for setting the location.
  • Location: Depending on the Location Entry Format selected, you may see either fields for Latitude and Longitude (default) or Northing, Easting and Zone (UTM). If you have an internal GPS and have allowed access to it for this website, you will see GPS information. If you want to manually enter the location or are not supplying a location, you can click on "Stop Using GPS" to go into "Manual" mode.
  • Trail: This is required when no location is provided.
  • Private: If you are logged on to AZ Trail To Go there will be a toggle button for Private. Select Private to prevent this item from being displayed to other users after it is submitted.

In addition to the above information, a photo may be submitted. Not all browsers allow access to your device's internal camera and some that do don't allow the selection between multiple cameras. Below the Location section, you will either see a button for Camera or Choose File. Depending on what is availabe from your device you may also see a button at the bottom of the screen allowing you to select a Picture Source.

Note that some browsers do not support access to the Camera from the browser but do not properly indicate that information. So you even if you see a Camera option it may not work. If you can't use the camera directly from the website, you can still use your camera app to take a picture and save it. Then use the Choose File option to select the picture.

Items

The Items page has limited functionality offline. This page allows you to view items that have been reported. When online, you may enter any combination of the following criteria:

  • Item Type: You may select one or more Item Type to view. If no Item Types are selected, all will be displayed.
  • Passage: You may select one or more Passages to view. If no Passages are selected, all will be displayed.
  • Filter Type: Select either Uncleared or Cleared items to view.
  • From Date: If you are viewing Uncleared items, the from date will filter items based on the date reported. For Cleared items, this will filter items based on the date cleared.
  • To Date: If you are viewing Uncleared items, the to date will filter items based on the date reported. For Cleared items, this will filter items based on the date cleared.

  • Once you have specified your criteria, you may click on any of the following options:

  • Display Results: This will apply the entered criteria, display the list of items.
  • Export: You can export the selected items to one of 3 formats:
    • Download as GPX: This will create a GPX file containing the selected passages and items base on the criteria and download that file to your device.
    • Download as KML: This will create a KML file containing the selected passages and items base on the criteria and download that file to your device.
    • Download as KMZ: This will create a KMZ file containing the selected passages and items base on the criteria and download that file to your device.
  • Show Map: This will display the selected items on a map.
  • Save List For Offline: This will save the selected items in the browser so that they can be viewed when you are offline.
  • Clear Offline List: This deletes the saved list from the browser.
  • When accessed offline, the items, if any, that were saved for offline will appear without the search fields.

For displayed items, the following options are available depending on your permissions:

    • Edit (only available online for trail stewards)

Allows trail stewards to edit existing items.

    • Details (only available online)

Displays detail information and map of item.

    • Start Tracking (only available for items that have location information)

Turns on tracking for the item. See description of tracking below.

    • Delete (only available online for trail stewards)

Allows trail stewards to delete an existing item. Deleting an item removes all references to it in the system and is intended to remove duplicate items. Stewards should use the Mark Cleared option to indicate that the item no longer exists.

    • Verify (only available online for unverified items for trail stewards)

Allows trail stewards to verify an item that has been submitted by an unverified user.

    • Mark Cleared (only available for items not already cleared for trail stewards)

Allows trail stewrds to indicate that an item no longer exists.

Items that are marked cleared when offline will appear on the Pending Items page. Deleting it from the pending items page before it is submitted to the serve will undo the clear operation.

    Tracking

Up to 5 items can be tracked. Items that are being tracked show up at the top of the list with the description of the item, the distance and direction. If your device contains an internal compass, a pointer will display the direction of the item. Otherwise the current bearing will be displayed. Because of the difference between magnetic north and true north (between 9.8 and 11.2 degrees along the AZ Trail), the compass heading is adjusted by 10.5 degrees to approximate true north.
